Is Portugal safe to travel to now?

Before a rural drive, check the official IPMA fire-danger information that morning. If a road is closed, reroute instead of following a sat-nav shortcut through rural roads. Call 112 if you see a fire or face an emergency.
What are the Portugal entry rules for UK tourists in 2026?
EES border checks are now part of Schengen travel. British visitors may be asked for fingerprints and a facial image, meaning immigration can take longer. There is no EES fee or advance registration required. See the official UK EES guidance.
ETIAS is different and is not operating yet. The EU says it is due to start in the last quarter of 2026. Travellers should not pay websites claiming to sell an ETIAS authorisation before the official system opens.
Do UK tourists need a visa for Portugal?
